I'm connecting with my own personal heritage in a special way. My father recently sent me an old photo of my great-grandfather, Marco Antonio Piedrahita Jaramillo, known as "Marquitos" in Medellin, Colombia. He was famous for selling juice drinks near the soccer stadium in El Barrio Antioquia. Going deeper into my family history, with roots in both Medellin and Cali, has been an eye-opening experience revealing a history of resilience and strength. There's an intriguing article about "Marquitos" that I've known about, and it's making me think about turning his life story into a short film. His journey, filled with both hardships and joy as a humble juice seller, is a story worth sharing.

Reflecting on the incredible love and support I've received from my Lambda Upsilon Lambda fraternity brothers over the years. For many of us, particularly people of color, it's the social, cultural, and professional networks forged during our college days that underscore the transformative power of a post-secondary education. These experiences are why I'm a staunch advocate for the importance of college and the doors it can open. @lambdas1982 🟤🟡
A huge thank you to my hermanos as I continue telling stories through film and strive to pave the way for the next generation of diverse filmmakers in the Film and Television industry through public education. Your support fuels my drive and dedication to our shared mission. #LasMetas

🎥✨ Congratulations to Hanan Harchol! 🌟🍎
Thrilled to announce the NYC Premiere of ABOUT A TEACHER by my friend and acclaimed film educator, Hanan Harchol, at The Museum of the Moving Image. A truly inspiring film for new teachers, showcasing the real challenges and growth in education. Hanan, a 2023 Big Apple Award winner, continues to amaze us! Catch this must-see film on Feb 10, 2024, 5:00 p.m. at the Redstone Theater, followed by a powerful panel discussion with NYC Public School officials and UFT representatives. This will surely be the hottest ticket in town!
About the Screening:
Hanan Harchol is the writer and director of ABOUT A TEACHER, a semi-autobiographical feature debut film about Hanan’s experience as a new teacher in the New York City public school system. The film takes us through Hanan’s first three years, showing how he wanted to quit within his first year, as 41% of New York City teachers do, and why he chose to stay. Hanan has now been teaching for 14 years, and is one of this year’s recipients of the Big Apple Award, New York City’s, highest teaching accolade, given to just 49 teachers out of over 75,000. “The irony of course,” as Hanan puts it, “is that in my first year I wanted to quit, and they wanted to fire me”. ABOUT A TEACHER will have its New York premiere at the Museum Of The Moving Image, in Queens, on Feb 10 at 5pm, followed by a panel discussion featuring representatives from the Chancellor’s office, the UFT, and education professionals, discussing how to improve teacher training and support, with the hopes of lowering the high teacher attrition rate.
MoMI Tickets: teachers get a special $5 admission price by using the code TEACHERS5 to purchase an advance ticket and presenting an ID when you pick up your ticket on the day of the screening. LINK IN BIO!

Westbury Arts Hosts an Exclusive First Look at ‘South Shore’
By Ed Shin of Long Island Press
Westbury Arts held a test-screening of the highly anticipated short film SOUTH SHORE, starring Dexter Strong Buell, Dylan Hernandez, Hassan Bradley, and Brandi Satterfield. The evening was a celebration of local independent cinema, filled with intriguing discussions and insightful reflections.
Directed by Dexter Strong Buell and produced by Kevin Lopez and Justine Lucas, South Shore is a poignant narrative inspired by Joseph Conrad’s “The Secret Sharer” and real events on Long Island. The film highlights themes of leaving and belonging, suspicion, and mutual aid through the story of a reclusive sailor who confronts a young immigrant man he suspects of a grave deed.
In developing the story, Buell and Lopez drew on their experience as educators in local schools in support of young people’s daily struggle to find a place for themselves in a complex world. “The young man at the center of this story is based on the experience of students we know and worked with directly,” Buell said.
The event began with a warm reception, where attendees mingled and prepared for the exclusive “sneak peek” screening. Following the screening, the audience participated in a dynamic “Q and A” session with the film’s creative team. This interaction allowed for deeper engagement with the film’s themes, particularly around immigration and mental health, enhancing the audience’s understanding of Long Island’s independent cinema scene and the role of art in social discourse.
The production of South Shore was made possible through the statewide community regrant program, supported by The New York State Council of the Arts, the Governor, and the New York State Legislature, and administered by the Huntington Arts Council. The film serves as a “proof of concept,” introducing characters and plots that lay the groundwork for a feature-length script developed since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. @huntingtonarts @nyscouncilonthearts
