We had a wonderful evening at the John W. Engeman Theater in Northport, NY! A huge thank you to the Huntington Arts Council for showcasing our film, "SOUTH SHORE," at the 2024 Chapin Awards. It was a true celebration of community and the arts on Long Island. From the screening of our film to the live tribute performances and the presentation of the Chapin Awards—it was an evening that truly highlighted the impact of storytelling. Check out the official soundtrack for SOUTH SHORE, wonderfully directed and written by Dexter Strong Buell, and produced by Kevin Lopez and Justine Lucas, with music exclusively composed by Lucas Taylor. @soundbyluca 🎶 "I scored South Shore before seeing any of the movie, so I primarily worked off of conceptual, sizzle reel-like material. The general vibes I picked up on and tried to emphasize were those of loneliness, despair, anxiety, and dread, which build and eventually release into a more content, buoyant feeling. Given that the majority of the film takes place on Russ’ boat, I wanted the soundtrack to mirror the visuals. I focused on creating something that sounded industrial, metallic, and weather-worn. The juxtaposition of jagged, dissonant sounds with deep bass is where the score came together for me, and started to feel complementary to the footage and story. The five tracks that made the cut were a small sample out of a larger collection of songs/motifs that I composed (mostly) with two synthesizers - a Prophet Rev 2, which I used for some of the deeper, thicker aspects of the score, and an OP-1, which made up the bulk of the metallic, asymmetrical and idiosyncratic aspects of the music. I'm connecting with my own personal heritage in a special way. My father recently sent me an old photo of my great-grandfather, Marco Antonio Piedrahita Jaramillo, known as "Marquitos" in Medellin, Colombia. He was famous for selling juice drinks near the soccer stadium in El Barrio Antioquia. Going deeper into my family history, with roots in both Medellin and Cali, has been an eye-opening experience revealing a history of resilience and strength. There's an intriguing article about "Marquitos" that I've known about, and it's making me think about turning his life story into a short film.
